Overview

This tutorial shows you how to create and open a work order so you can start tracking production right away.

Before You Start

  • You must be a Member or Admin in Elevated Signals.

  • Have a Work Order Type that fits what you're trying to create—if not, talk to your admin or consult the docs.

  • (Optional) Check if there’s a Bill of Materials involved so you’re not caught off guard mid-way.

Step 1: Start a New Work Order

Get set up to launch a new Work Order.

  1. Click Work Orders in the left sidebar

  2. Select the Work Orders submodule

  3. Press + New Work Order to start building

Pro Tip: If your team uses naming conventions, align your title early on to avoid edits later.

Step 2: Fill Out the Work Order Form

Time to enter the key details for your new Work Order.

  1. Select a Work Order Type from the dropdown

  2. (Optional) Choose a Bill of Material if one is relevant

  3. Set the Bill of Material Multiplier (defaults to 1)

  4. Add a Name for the Work Order (optional)

  5. (Optional) Add a Description to give your team more context

  6. Click Create—the Work Order will be saved and appear at the top of your list in an unopened state

Pro Tip: BOM multipliers directly relate to how your BOM was built. Check with your team if you're unsure how it scales.

🗒️ Note: Work Order Names are optional—if you skip this, the system will use the Work Order Type name instead.

Step 3: Open the Work Order

Now that it’s created, let’s move the Work Order into an "Opened" state.

  1. Click on the newly created Work Order at the top of the list

  2. In the Work Order menu, click the Actions dropdown and select Open Work Order

  3. Fill out the Open Work Order form with the correct Date and Location

  4. Click Open to activate the Work Order—it’s now ready to be worked on

Pro Tip: If the Location field is pre-filled, it was set up in the Work Order Type settings. You can still change it here if needed.

🗒️ Note: The Work Order remains inactive until it’s officially opened.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem: Can’t see the + New Work Order button

    • Fix: You might not have the right permissions. Only users with Member or Admin roles can create Work Orders.

  • Problem: A Work Order Type or Bill of Materials is missing from the dropdown

    • Fix: It may have been archived. Check with your admin or review the setup under the appropriate module.

  • Problem: Location field is blank when opening a Work Order

    • Fix: The Location wasn’t preset in the Work Order Type. You’ll need to manually select it or update the Type settings.
